Forklift Fuel Tank - The majority of fuel tanks are fabricated; nevertheless several fuel tanks are made by skilled craftspeople. Restored tanks or custom tanks could be found on motorcycles, aircraft, automotive and tractors.
There are a series of certain requirements to be followed when constructing fuel tanks. Usually, the craftsman sets up a mockup in order to know the accurate size and shape of the tank. This is normally done making use of foam board. After that, design issues are addressed, including where the outlets, seams, drain, baffles and fluid level indicator would go. The craftsman has to know the alloy, temper and thickness of the metallic sheet he will use to make the tank. When the metal sheet is cut into the shapes required, a lot of parts are bent in order to create the basic shell and or the baffles and ends used for the fuel tank.
Many baffles in aircraft and racecars have "lightening" holes. These flanged holes have two purposes. They add strength to the baffles while reducing the weight of the tank. Openings are added toward the ends of construction for the fuel pickup, the filler neck, the fluid-level sending unit and the drain. Every so often these holes are added when the fabrication method is done, other times they are made on the flat shell.
Next, the baffles and ends could be riveted into place. The rivet heads are often soldered or brazed so as to stop tank leaks. Ends could then be hemmed in and flanged and brazed, or soldered, or sealed with an epoxy type of sealant, or the ends could also be flanged and then welded. After the brazing, welding and soldering has been done, the fuel tank is checked for leaks.
